Hi friends, i had Hp Pavilion tx 2500z laptop and it has lot of features.

Everyone who saw my screen thought it was covered in oil or something... or is it possible that i had a defective screen

No not at all. Each and every notebook will be tested by experienced prefessionals.
After that only they will release in to the market.
I think ur screen is covered with dust. Clean ur notebook screen everyday with soft cloth.
Nothing to worry about ur notebook screen.....
